Game On Wales is the sports programme delivered by The Coalfields Regeneration Trust - Charity no: 1074930 - an organisation that celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2024, is an 'Associate Member' of the FAW and exists to champion and strengthen our former coal mining towns and villages.
In 1918 there were 60 pits, across two North Wales coal fields, in Denbighshire and Flintshire. Although the industry's links to south Wales are well known, it is just as important to recognise how important the industry was to north Wales. By 1978 there were three pits left in north Wales - Point of Ayr at Mostyn, Flintshire, and Bersham and Gresford near Wrexham. At the Gresford Colliery, 266 men died in a disaster in 1934. Gresford had closed by the time of the miners' strike in 1984/85, when Bersham Colliery went on strike while Point of Ayr continued operating until the summer of 1996. These are where the consequences of the loss of the coal industry are still being felt, even in the generations that are too young to have ever worked in the industry.
CRT significantly emphasises tackling health and wellbeing in coalfield communities in Wales and the UK. Thus, CRT Game On Wales continues to do our bit in helping establish new community walking football sessions and are guardians of Wales’ longest-standing walking football tournament ‘The Coalfield Cup’ (established in 2015). It celebrates all the good things about walking football and is open to community and club walking football teams from Wales' former mining communities. As part of our 25th anniversary celebrations, we are delighted to host a North Wales edition of the festival for teams based within Wrexham or Flintshire.
Team / Tournament Information:
This is an invitational tournament for clubs based in Wrexham or Flintshire local authority areas only. This is in line with our charitable objectives and the reason we can make it free to enter.
• Players must be aged 60+. We won't be asking for proof, just trust. We adhere to the Wales Walking Football League rules (as they currently stand) that allow one player who reaches the age of 60 (for example) in the calendar year of the tournament to be registered as an over 60 even though he would be 59 on the day of the tournament.
• Matches 6-a-side with a maximum squad size of 9 players per team. Teams are to wear club colours with individual squad numbers.
• Mixed-gender teams are welcome. Shin pads and goalie gloves are mandatory.
• Max 2 entries per club; players cannot switch between teams.
• Match duration is likely to be 10-12 minutes per game.
