The Classic City Band of Athens, Georgia is the oldest continuously functioning community band in Georgia. Founded in 1976 for the purposes of preserving the rich cultural heritage of the American concert band, this non-profit organization gives free concerts throughout the year in Athens, Georgia and surrounding communities. On September 7, 2006, Athens Mayor Heidi Davison and the Athens Clarke-County Commission issued a proclamation declaring The Classic City Band “the official municipal band of Athens, Georgia.”
This free concert focuses on British music, including works by Gordon Jacob, Gustav Holst, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Sir Anthony Hopkins. The anchor piece is Lincolnshire Posy, a setting of several folk songs by Percy Grainger, one of the masterpieces of 20th century band music. Come join us!
