This epic thematic revue puts a human face on the greatest tragedy of American history. It explores the experiences of the soldiers and leaders who fought for their way of life. It also examines the lives of the lovers and families whom they left behind, as well as the hopes and fears of the slaves whose freedom was at stake. This musical passionately asks us to consider our beliefs about freedom, honor and faith.
Artistic Director’s Note: By the very nature of its title, this show invites controversy. We anticipate there will be persons in the community who ask why we want to produce what could be perceived as a divisive and polarizing selection. It is not Theatre Alliance’s desire to be inflammatory. It is our desire to present works that challenge our audiences and our performers and spark conversations to occur, particularly those which help us remember history that we should not forget, lest we repeat it. “The Civil War” is a heart-breaking examination of the horrors of the war, not championing the views of any given side, but exposing the human aspect and from all viewpoints. Everyone is given a voice in this collection of stories told mostly in song, with a lush score by the composer of “Jekyll & Hyde,” “Bonnie and Clyde,” “The Scarlet Pimpernel,” and “Wonderland.” It is our hope that onstage participants of this work, as well as those who choose to experience it from our audience, come with an openness to hear the earnest words of the past and leave unified with the collective promise to move humanity and equality forward.
