In considering Richard Wagner’s music in film, one can scour through more than 41 hours of music from Rienzi to Parsifal and an oeuvre of more than 1000 films spanning across 120 years of cinematic history.
Perhaps it is impossible to get acquainted with all the material in the span of one’s lifetime. Nevertheless, this bears testimony to the passionate obsession that the film industry has towards Wagner.
The birth of film as a genre around 1900 was a culmination of technological and artistic development, a fusion of different media and represented the creation of a new, formidable entertainment industry. For many directors, film became a perfect playground and vehicle to present and use the music of Richard Wagner.
In his talk, Dr. Peter Krakauer will explore some 'leitmotifs' in the inseparable and long-lasting relationship between the phenomenon of film and Wagner’s music.
The talk is free to all RWAS members, and $5.00 to non-members. Please register your interest at [email protected].
