About this Event

Welcome to The Christie Proton e-School.

Join us for an exciting six weeks of virtual learning as the school delivers ‘The Christie Proton Therapy e-School’ from 3rd November to 10th December 2021.

The Christie Proton School is led and run by experts in proton therapy and education from the Christie Proton Clinical Service, the University of Manchester and the School of Oncology. The course content is based on the specialist knowledge and experience of those who have developed the proton service and are involved in the delivery of proton therapy to patients here in Manchester.

The course will provide an in-depth perspective in proton therapy and involve live presentations, interactive sessions and virtual networking.

What can you expect to learn?

Live webinars of fundamentals of proton therapy, science and research in proton therapy and clinical application of proton therapy. Webinars will also include sessions on service and centre development.

Interactive delivery with opportunities to network with faculty and delegates virtually.

Dates and module delivery

Week 1 Fundamentals of Proton Therapy: 3, 4 & 5 November 2021 - Basics of proton physics, indications of proton therapy, treatment planning

Week 2 Service Development: 9 & 10 November 2021 - Commissioning, Treatment workflows and quality assurance

Week 3 Science and Research in Proton Therapy: 15 & 16 November 2021 - Radiobiology, RBE and range verification, clinical trials with protons

Week 4 Clinical Protons: 22 & 24 November 2021 - Case studies (from MDT to treatment delivery): Head and neck, upper GI and lung

Week 5 Clinical Protons: 29 November, 1 & 3 December 2021 - Case studies (from MDT to treatment delivery): Sarcoma, paediatrics (Extracranial and CNS)

Week 6 Clinical Protons: 7 December 2021 - Case studies (from MDT to treatment delivery): CNS, base of skull

The above sessions will commence at the same time each day 08:00-10:00 GMT *

*Some sessions may have a later finishing time of 10:30, and are subject to change, so please be aware when booking the course*

Dr Ed Smith - Clinical Director and Director of The Christie Proton School

Prof Karen Kirkby - The Richard Rose Chair for Proton Therapy Physics, University of Manchester

Prof Ran McKay - Director of Christie Medical Physics and Engineering

Alongside these, the faculty includes programme managers, project managers and practitioners who have been directly involved in the development of a highly successful proton service.

Day to day decision making processes will be demonstrated, including the opportunity to talk through real world cases.

The faculty will share their experiences and highlight key learning points.
