More about The The Choirs YYJ:
Since 2013 The Choirs YYJ has endeavored to bring amateur singers together to perform unique and original choral arrangements of pop, indie and folk songs.
Before we were four ensembles (The Choir, The Chorus, Mini-Choir and Sound Dragon), we were a motley group of people who gathered in local music shop in 2013 to sing well-known and not-so-well-known songs for fun. (Still our first love.) In those early days, we had no idea that so many of our friends and neighbours were eager to belt out a song!
Today, our group has multiplied in size, notoriety, and music-making activities. Collectively, our non-auditioned ensembles, “The Choirs YYJ,” includes over 200 people of all ages, genders, experiences, vocal abilities and musical tastes. The Mini-Choir is an auditioned chamber group performing similar yet more challenging repertoire.
The Choirs are Directed by Marc Jenkins, and accompanied on piano by Erin Gray, and sometimes on guitar by Layten Kramer.
The Choirs YYJ rehearse and perform, and are guests on the territories of the lək̓ʷəŋən (Lekwungen) and SENĆOŦEN-speaking (W̱SÁNEĆ/Saanich) peoples, known today as Esquimalt, Songhees and W̱SÁNEĆ First Nations.
