The Charrúas, Candombe Jazz fusion from Uruguay / South American Latin Jazz. Martín Muguerza drums Horacio Di Yorio piano Carlos Plá bass, with GUEST MUSICIANS Grant Mason trumpet/flugel Levon Oscar tenor/alto sax.The trio returns to Aotearoa for a second time as part of the Tauranga Jazz Festival, with their opening gig at the iconic Nivara Lounge in Hamilton. Accompanied by talented local musicians Grant Mason (trumpet/flugelhorn) and Levon Oscar (tenor/alto sax), they promise another electrifying performance.
The Charrúas deliver a rich repertoire that blends jazz and funk with Afro-Uruguayan traditional rhythms such as candombe, tango, and milonga, creating a captivating and very unique sound. Their performance features music by iconic Uruguayan artists like Hugo Fattoruso and Ruben Rada, as well as the band’s original compositions and jazz standards interpreted through a candombe lens.
Candombe is a traditional music brought to Uruguay by African slaves during colonial times. Since its origins, it has fused with other local styles to become a distinctive hallmark of Uruguayan musical identity. Afro-Latin music followers will recognize the son clave, a 3-2 rhythm that flows continuously beneath the melody.
The band members are accomplished musicians whose careers span over three decades. Their ongoing involvement in the national and international jazz circuit has led them to collectively participate in more than 120 albums—many of which have achieved Gold and Platinum status, received Graffiti Awards, and been selected as Best Jazz Album multiple years in a row. Over the years, in various formations, the Charrúas have toured extensively, performing at jazz festivals throughout Latin America, Mexico, the USA, and Europe.
