About this Event
The Changing Same
Event Location: NorthStar Church of the Arts
On July 8th,1944, Private Booker T. Spicely was headed back home to Camp Butner after enjoying an evening in the Hayti neighborhood of Durham. He was unaware it would be his last. In the darkness of that night, he would become yet another victim of Jim Crow “justice.” Now, some seventy years later, Spicely’s story is being brought into the light by playwrights Mike Wiley and Howard L. Craft. The play, The Changing Same. will be fully produced in November, but a special reading of the play will take place at Durham’s North Star Church of The Arts, July 7th at 7pm, on the eve of the 80th anniversary of Private Spicely’s slaying. The play was commissioned by The Booker T. Spicely Committee, funded by Duke Energy, and the reading will be open to the public, with donations going to the Booker T. Spicely Committee. Produced by StreetSigns Center for Literature and Performance, The Piedmont Performance Factory, Mike Wiley Productions, and The Kenan Institute for Ethics’ America’s Hallowed Ground Project. Written by Mike Wiley and Howard L. Craft. Performed by Mike Wiley. Directed by Joseph Megel.
