About this Event

Join the Rt. Rev Emily Onyango, Ph.D., for a discussion about the challenges of gender-based violence in Kenya and the Anglican Church’s response. Bp. Emily has a special focus in her ministry on training and mentorship of women leaders. In her presentation, Bishop Onyango will draw on a paper she wrote on this topic discussing how the church in Kenya has turned from advocating for women to encouraging patriarchal practices that uphold gender-based violence.

Bp. Emily Onyango serves as Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Bondo, Kenya and will be visiting VTS in October both for a sabbatical period and for the Anglican Communion Science Commission consultation at the end of the month. Bishop Onyango was a part of the recent Africa 6 meeting of women bishops convened in Kenya from January 8 to 14 of 2024. She holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of Wales and a MTh in Church History from Asian Centre of Theological Studies, Seoul. She has used these areas of learning to investigate root causes of gender-based violence, difficulties youth face in Kenya, and poverty.
