About the featured artist:
Amanda Witucki, the artist behind The Paper Committee, is a self-taught paper sculpture artist living in Austin, Texas. Dubbed as "new-school origami," Amanda brings a full spectrum of colored papers to a craft of historically simplified palettes. She appreciates the repetitive nature of the craft; some installations have over five thousand folded shapes within them. The practice itself serves its own purpose for Amanda; the hours spent folding the same shape over and over are a form of meditation. There's also a certain magic in taking one simple shape that has little meaning by itself, but magnified by the thousands can convey an unpredictable effect. Much like so much in this world from negative self talk to global warming, small things have a big impact once it's repeated countless times. Color is a prominent focus in Amanda's sculptures, and many of her palettes are translations of memories, moments, or even farcical discussions of consumerist pop culture. Oftentimes she has a visceral reaction to colors, and seeks to convey that feeling to the viewer. She likes to work with non-traditional palettes, often juxtaposing pastels or neon with deep earth tones to give tension and moments of pause in her pieces.
