The Burning Hell are coming to Canberra for the first time, with PEI's Poet Laureate Tanya Davis and Alison Proctor from local legends the Cashews. The Burning Hell is the ongoing musical project of songwriter Mathias Kom and multi-instrumentalists Ariel Sharratt, Jake Nicoll, and Maria Peddle, based in Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland, Canada. Kom’s wry storytelling lyrics are the heart of their densely populated genre-shifting songs, packed with an abundance of literary, historical, and pop-cultural forebears and hooks. Switching out woodwinds for drumsticks and synths for strings, the band moves with heavy rhyme and a light step in an ever-surprising, exuberant live show. The band toured their latest album ‘Garbage Island’ at several Australian festivals early in 2023 and are coming back with a new record.
Tanya Davis is a writer and performer based in rural Epekwitk / Prince Edward Island. As PEI’s current Poet Laureate, she speaks to local issues and events and advocates for literacy, literature, and the power of words.
Alison Procter
Known primarily as the taller of the two Cashews, Alison eschewed her chance at rock ‘n’ roll stardom for life in Canberra’s small ponds, the mountains, the bogong moths and the always green lights down the Tuggeranong Parkway.
