Title: "Budget 2024: Post Budget Analysis".

Speakers: Michael Taft (SIPTU), Dr. Tricia Keilthy (St Vincent de Paul) and Dr. Rory O'Farrell (TU Dublin).

Date: Thursday 12 October 2023.

Time: Registration at 15:15. The lecture will run from 15:30 to 16:30.

Location:  ICTU offices, 31/32 Parnell Square, Dublin 1, D01 YR92 and a live streamed event.

Abstract and seminar details:

Michael Taft (SIPTU), Dr. Tricia Keilthy (St Vincent de Paul) and Dr. Rory O'Farrell (TU Dublin) will present their analysis of Budget 2024.  Subsequently, a discussion will be open to the floor, where NERI Co-director, Dr. Tom McDonnell will act as the chairperson and present questions to the three speakers.

Was it a fair budget?  Is the government's approach sustainable in the long-run?  What are the implications for different groups?  Is it a growth friendly budget?  What were the big policy successes and failures?  Come along to the NERI seminar to hear this analysis.

Biography of Presenters:

Michael Taft is a Research Officer with SIPTU and author of Notes on the Front, a political economy blog.  He is also a member of the National Competitiveness and Productivity Council, and the Low Pay Commission.

Dr Tricia Keilthy joined the Society of St Vincent de Paul in 2016 and is currently the charities Head of Social Justice and Policy. She coordinates the policy and advocacy work of SVP which focuses on poverty issues related to social protection, education, housing, employment and energy policy. She has worked in a variety of research roles in organisations such as the Combat Poverty Agency, One Family, the Institute of Public Health in Ireland, TCD and UCD. Tricia holds a PhD in Social Policy from UCD and a Masters in Applied Social Research from TCD.

Dr Rory O’Farrell is an economist with over a decade of experience working for policy institutes, international organisations, and in academia. Rory currently lectures economics in TU Dublin. Up to August 2020 Rory worked at the OECD in Paris, having previously worked for NERI (Dublin) and the ETUI (Brussels). Since completing his PhD in economics at the EUI (Florence), Rory’s research can be found in journals such as Labour Economics and New Technology, Work and Employment. In addition Rory has contributed to the media, with articles appearing The Irish Times and the Irish Independent.
