There are few things the Great Lakes region love more than sports and craft beer, and the Erie County Brewers Cup will bring both to Buffalo and Erie this May. Erie’s John Russell Brewing Company — in Erie County, Pennsylvania — has teamed up with Buffalo’s Big Ditch Brewing Company — in Erie County, New York — to put on the Erie County Brewers Cup, a home-and-away men’s soccer competition between Erie County derby rivals FC Buffalo and Erie Commodores on May 16 and 22.FC Buffalo and Erie Commodores forged a fierce and respectful rivalry for over a decade that sat quiet on the men’s side last season when the clubs found themselves in different leagues. It kicks on this spring when FC Buffalo hosts Erie Commodores at 7pm on Thursday, May 16 at Robert Rich Sr. All-High Stadium and then Erie returns the favor when FCB visits Saxon Stadium on the campus of Mercyhurst University at 6pm Wednesday, May 22. The winner on aggregate claims Erie County Brewers Cup bragging rights.
The Erie ‘friendly’ will be offered for free admissions at Mercyhurst University's Saxon Stadium.
The breweries are also collaborating on a new beer — Lake Erie Life Summer IPA — a tropical IPA featuring flavors of guava, citrus, and kiwi, that will be available beginning May 14th in Buffalo and the week of May 20th in Erie.
John Russell Brewing Company (7520 Peach Street, Erie, PA) will feature the collaboration beer and other Big Ditch craft beers including Lake Erie Life Summer IPA in Erie, PA, on tap at their brewery as well as sister pub and restaurant locations, plus at Saxon Stadium for the Brewers Cup game.
