Show Description:
A landmark of American queer theatre, The Boys in the Band is a sharp, funny, and raw exploration of friendship, love, and self-acceptance among a group of gay men in late-1960s New York. A birthday party spins out of control when alcohol, old grudges, and unexpected revelations bring buried truths to the surface. The play is both a time capsule of pre-Stonewall life and a timeless study of human vulnerability.
Auditions will consist of cold reads from the script.

Characters
• Michael – (Late 20s–40s) The witty, charming, and acerbic host. Struggles with self-loathing and uses humor and cruelty as armor. Needs strong emotional range.
• Donald – (Late 20s–40s) Michael’s friend, thoughtful and reserved. Neurotic, self-aware, and in therapy. Serves as a calm counterbalance to Michael.
• Harold – (30s–50s) The birthday guest. Self-deprecating, sharp-tongued, and brutally honest. Intellectual, caustic, and deeply insecure beneath the wit.
• Emory – (20s–40s) Flamboyant, unapologetic, and quick with a cutting remark. Outrageously funny but vulnerable underneath. Comic energy with heart.
• Larry – (20s–40s) Handsome, confident, sexually free. Struggles with commitment in his relationship with Hank. Playful, provocative, and charismatic.
• Hank – (30s–50s) Larry’s partner. More conservative and “straight-passing.” Recently separated from his wife. Desires stability and fidelity. Grounded and earnest.
• Bernard – (20s–40s) A Black man in the group. Kind, intelligent, and often understated. Faces casual racism with quiet strength, but holds deep pain.
• Cowboy – (Early 20s–30s) A good-looking, naive hustler hired as Harold’s “gift.” Sweet, simple, and comic relief. Physically confident.
• Alan McCarthy – (Late 20s–40s) Michael’s straight-laced college roommate. Married, but his presence stirs questions of repression and denial. Outsider who disrupts the party dynamic.
