How fast can you ride to the border of your state? Can you do it in one day? This is a totally unsupported gravel challenge. It is not a race, but a sprited social ride. We're giving you the idea, the course and nothing else. You're on your own. Get your riding crew together and see if you can make it to the border in a day!
Like many historic overlander missions, this ride will depart from Melbourne's original GPO. It follows mostly bike/shared paths on the way to Woodland Historic Park. This will be a neutral zone for the safety of other riders, pedestrians, dogs, and others using the shared paths. Please be careful when riding this path. Once you depart Woodlands it's time to see how fast you can get to the border! The route is a combination of quiet backroads, both sealed and gravel. There are even a few surprises along the way, including a river crossing. Most of the climbing is in the first half of the ride and it is all very gradual, making this a fast course with under 2,000 vm for the full 240 km.
There are two main resupply points at Lancefield (90 km) and Heathcote (138 km). For those needing a last minute water/snack top up there is an Ampol service station as you pass through Rochester near the end (212 km).
You will need to plan your ride carefully, ensuring you have plenty of snacks and water. Hot weather and strong head winds can mean slow going to resupply points - plan accordingly! We will not be organising anything for you along the way.The ride finishes at the Vic-NSW border on the Echuca-Moama Bridge. Your ride is complete once you tap the "Welcome to New South Wales" sign and take a finisher photo.
There are plenty of accommodation and services in Echuca, too. It is your responsibility to organise your accommodation. There are trains from Echuca to Melbourne the next day, and places will be limited (thanks V/line!). Alternatively you can ride to Bendigo for more frequent train departures. Or if you're feeling super energetic, why not ride the whole way home? Getting home is your responsibility to organise.
