The Bookery is delighted to welcome renowned folklorist and creator of The Folklore Podcast Mark Norman and author Tracey Norman for an atmospheric evening of folklore, witchcraft, and storytelling at The Bookery — perfect for the season of autumn mists and Halloween magic.Mark and Tracey will be discussing their latest books and sharing captivating tales drawn from Britain’s rich folkloric traditions and Devon’s hidden witchcraft history.
In 'Britain’s Folklore Year', Mark takes readers on a seasonal journey through the customs, celebrations and rituals that shape our cultural identity. From maypole dancing to worm-charming, and from wassailing to wife-carrying, this beautifully illustrated book reveals the origins of both well-known and obscure traditions across the UK.
Together, Mark and Tracey Norman also explore the darker side of Devon’s past in Devon’s Forgotten Witches 1860–1910, uncovering long-lost cases of witchcraft hidden in the British Newspaper Archive. These stories—tragic, mysterious, and often inexplicable—shine a light on the lives of ordinary people caught up in extraordinary accusations.
Mark and Tracey will be signing copies of both books on the evening.
