About this Event
The Boathouse Community Cinema presents a special screening for UN Human Rights Day: The Pearl Button
Join us for an evening of reflection, beauty, and discovery as The Boathouse Community Cinema marks UN Human Rights Day with a screening of The Pearl Button, the poetic and visually stunning documentary by acclaimed Chilean filmmaker Patricio Guzmán.
This mesmerising film is both a meditation and a revelation — tracing the deep relationship between water, memory, and the soul of Chile. Through breathtaking imagery and haunting storytelling, Guzmán explores how the country’s landscapes hold the echoes of two great tragedies: the genocide of the indigenous peoples of Patagonia, particularly the Yaghan, and the suffering of those who disappeared under Pinochet’s dictatorship.
The evening will also feature a curated exhibition of Yaghan culture, assembled by Carl Blackburn of The Boathouse. Drawing on his extensive travels in Patagonia — where he met the last speaker of the Yaghan language and is helping to translate a Yaghan-English-Spanish dictionary — Carl offers a rare glimpse into a vanishing world.
To conclude this powerful event, we’ll host a live link-up with a Chilean campaigner for indigenous rights, connecting our local community to voices of resilience and justice across the globe.
Join us for a night of profound cinema, cultural insight, and shared humanity.
