Join us as we honor four individuals who are constant advocates in the community with Aggie Awards. Aggie Brose, after whom the awards are named, epitomized the spirit of community activism and tirelessly fought for better housing, safer streets, and employment opportunities in her beloved Garfield neighborhood. Her dedication to the Bloomfield-Garfield Corporation spanned over four decades, and her unwavering commitment to positive change has left an indelible mark on Pittsburgh’s community development landscape.
Aggie Brose: A Tireless Fighter for the Community
Agnes J. Brose, affectionately known as Aggie, was a formidable force in the Garfield neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Co-founding the Bloomfield-Garfield Corporation in 1976, she dedicated her life to championing Garfield to grow from a blighted area into a vibrant community filled with potential for all its residents. Aggie was more than a community leader; she was a beloved neighbor, always on a first-name basis with those around her, whether they were local residents or influential figures in the city. Raised in Garfield, she was deeply connected to its evolution in Pittsburgh’s East End. Her vision for Garfield was one of diversity and opportunity. She dreamed of better housing, safer streets, improved infrastructure, quality education, robust employment opportunities, a thriving arts district, a local grocery store, and even a new bank. Her efforts were instrumental in bringing these dreams to reality. Aggie's personality was a remarkable balance of maternal warmth and fierce advocacy. She nurtured her family, friends, and co-workers, generously sharing her life’s wisdom. Yet, she was equally adept at challenging injustices and breaking down barriers imposed by those in power. Even when confronting elected officials, bureaucrats, or business owners, she did so with a grace that preserved their dignity, allowing for future collaboration without lingering resentment. To honor her legacy, we have named an award after Aggie Brose, celebrating her tireless dedication to the community. Her spirit continues to inspire and guide us.
