The Black Trauma Narrative: Battle to Breakthrough
Come join us for an insightful townhall style forum. The Black Trauma Narrative is designed to open dialogue for an understanding of how traumatic events significantly affect our health on an individual and community level.. This in-person event will be held at the Whitneyville Cultural Commons in Hamden, Connecticut.
The discussion will be multifaceted including :
- Historical impacts of the Black experience in America
- The effects of mass trauma
- Barriers, disparities and access to care
- Hope for recovery
A light catered brunch will be served.
Host organization Axxis Wellness is extending (1) complimentary consultation for individuals attending from the community (restrictions apply).
A complimenary in-service workshop will be extended to professionals attending from business, health and education sectors.

Our host is Dr. Tajhma Burroughs, behavioral occupational therapist with over 20 years of experience treating individuals across the lifespan with physical, psychological, and emotional deficits. Through her private practice, Axxis Wellness, Dr. Taj offers child, adolescent and adult services, community-based supports and behavioral skills training.
On our speaker panel is:
Dr. Dilice Robertson, PMHNP and CEO of New Haven based Lifespan Collaborative Services. Dr. Robertson is dedicated to pediatric mental health, particularly within marginalized communities. She's also an educator, currently serving as Associate Clinical Professor at NYU Meyers College of Nursing in the Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program.
Dr. Joseph Johnson, Doctor of Educational Psychology. He is a former Special Education teacher for New Haven Public Schools and former researcher for the State of Connecticut Education Resource Center (SERC), as well as for the District of Columbia Public Schools.
Dr. LaToya Gaines, licensed clinical psychologist and owner of New Jersey based private practice, Culture of Wellness LLC. Areas of her expertise include psychological assessment, trauma, family crises, and cognitive behavioral therapy.
Dr. Shaylice Meserole, a board certified psychiatric nurse practitioner with a doctorate of nursing from Yale University. Dr. Meserole evaluates and treats a variety of mental health diagnoses across the lifespan. She has led community behavioral health clinics here in Connecticut, and one of the largest mental health facilities in Indiana.
Dr. William Johnson, Director of Educational Strategy at the William Caspar Graustein Memorial Fund. A core mission of this organization is to help effectuate justice and equity in the U.S., with a focus is on education as both a process and tool for personal and social transformation.
