About this Event
Join a guided tour of this working gun and ammunition testing facility and learn about the origins of the proof house and its modern function.
The Birmingham Proof House was established in 1813 to test firearms and ammunition to ensure user safety. Over 200 years later the proof house is still at the forefront of safety testing.
During Birmingham Heritage Week you can join a guided tour to learn about the historical development of small arms and ammunition and the ongoing responsibilities of the Birmingham Proof house. The tour will include a visit to the museum pattern rooms, displaying historic firearms and ammunition.
The tour will start with tea & coffee in the Board Room. After an introductory talk about the history of the Proof House and the Birmingham Gun Trade you will be guided around the site, looking at the various areas used for proving arms and testing ammunition. You will also visit the museum rooms.
Visitors are required to complete a ‘Visitor Form’, providing name and address. After booking your visit, the Proof House will request this information. The Birmingham Proof House reserves the right to undertake security checks on potential visitors and refuse entry without explanation.
Photography is not permitted. Visitors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. We do not recommend the tour for children under the age of 12.
Access - The Proof House is Grade II* listed with narrow access areas, steep steps and no lift. The tour does include first floor areas.
