The BIPOC Rest Group: Winter/Spring 2025 Book Club and Rest Space

This book club and rest space is a full series starting Feb 12th 2025 - we will meet on the second Wednesday of each month for 4 months. Make-It Springfield, 286 Bridge St.

These are the dates:

Wednesday, Feb 12th 6:00-7:30pm

Wednesday, March 12th 6:00-7:30pm

Wednesday, April 9th 6:00-7:30pm

Wednesday, May 14th 6:00-7:30pm

The BIPOC Rest Group is a monthly space for BIPOC people to learn about and practice rest.

Facilitated by Jamila Jackson, this space is inspired by Tricia Hersey’s work in the Nap Ministry and integrates drinking relaxing herbal teas, resting to the healing sounds of meditative drumming, engaging in daydreaming practices, and building a compassionate community that truly feels like safe family.

There are free books for all who register for this 4 month series. This season we will be reading Tricia Hersey's new Book: We Will Rest: The Art of Escape!

When we try to rest, slow down, be present and relax- most likely we will encounter the truths in our bodies. We may find the pain, exhaustion, grief, fear and anger that we have been holding in/holding down. In addition to sound healing from the handpan drum, Jamila (who leads therapuetic and healing work with horses) will be incorporating the therapuetic lessons from horses to inspire daydreams and help us navigate challenging feelings. Each session will feature a story about a different horse that has guided Jamila into deep rest. Guided by our imaginations and collaborating with the image and energy of the horses from the stories, we will explore how horses can carry us across inner landscapes of rest and healing.

BIPOC (Black Indigenous and people of color) have historically had our imagination, creativity, and physical labor exploited in this country and many others. We need to be given the space, time and support to access rest. This is why we gather in The BIPOC Rest Group at Make-It Springfield.

Accessing rest is nearly impossible for many people. We live in a culture that values profit over people and requires us to work without much or any time to rest. In addition to that, many of us use work as a way to cope with being too tired or weighed down by stress or trauma. This is why spaces to learn about and practice ways to rest is essential.
