August 23 | The Bioscope Independent Cinema | Only 47 Seats Available
The Bioscope is proud to present an intimate winter’s evening with two of South Africa’s most visionary artists: Wren Hinds and Featuring Hymnself, performing in a rare shared billing inside Johannesburg’s beloved independent cinema. With just 47 tickets available, this one-night-only performance offers a singular listening experience in one of the city’s most atmospheric spaces.
Wren Hinds, based in Cape Town and raised on South Africa’s East Coast, has quietly become one of the most compelling singer-songwriters in the southern hemisphere. With a voice that recalls the introspective grace of Elliott Smith and Nick Drake, his songs are tender explorations of grief, fatherhood, time and memory—honest and lyrical, never sentimental. His 2023 album Don’t Die in the Bundu, released on UK label Bella Union (Fleet Foxes, Beach House, Midlake, Father John Misty) was called “a subtle form of intensity” by Mojo Magazine, and “a gently beguiling set of sweet, soft hymns to hope in choppy times” by Record Collector.
Wren will be joined by his full band for this rare performance, featuring Jonno Sweetman on drums, Maurice Paliaga on bass, and Dylan Fine on electric guitar—each adding depth and colour to his already richly textured sound.
Sharing the bill is Featuring Hymnself—a quiet, reflective moment from Siyabonga Mthembu, formerly the lead singer of The Brother Moves On and Shabaka and the Ancestors. This evocative project is rooted in stillness and listening; a space shaped by hymns shared by travelling music makers. The ensemble features Solethu Madasa (keys), Vuyo Tshwele (flute), and Nicola du Toit (cello)—together creating a meditative soundscape both spiritual and grounded.
One night only. Two luminous performances. Just 47 tickets.
