Interested in the historical origins of the Bible from a secular perspective? Come join us as we read through the Bible and discuss its historical background, ethical questions, and cultural impact. Each session, led by historian Matt Miller, will look at a particular passage or book of the Bible through three major lenses: textual, historical, and ethical.Textual: What can textual criticism tell us about this particular passage or book? What are its implications, and what does it tell us about ancient wisdom traditions and the people who created them?
Historical: What can the scholarship of the social sciences, such as history, anthropology, and sociology, tell us about the Bible? How can it help us understand other cultures and religions better? How does it help us understand fundamentalism?
Ethical: What effects has the Bible had on our moral culture and milieu, both positive and negative? What can the Bible teach us as a piece of literature about how to live an ethical life? What is it not able to teach us?
The Bible Beyond Belief will meet for four sessions: March 9, March 16, April 20, and April 27.
