The Belfry is a new play co-written by Amanda Sage-Comerford and Neil Levi, developed with support from the Hudson County History Partnership Grant through the Hudson County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs.
The Belfry explores a mysterious occurrence in Jersey City when two half-moon lights appeared in the belfry of St. Joseph’s Church in July 1921, drawing thousands of people in search of a miracle. The lights disappeared and reappeared in 1954, again attracting crowds. The play will delve into the lives of those who witnessed these events—housewives, immigrants, the devout, and skeptics—exploring whether the lights symbolized hope or something more ominous.
