Film Critic Carrie Rickey will join us in the theater on October 9th to celebrate the release of her new biography A Complicated Passion: The Life and Work of Agnès Varda. She will be signing copies of her new book in our lobby from 7:00 - 7:30 pm. Carrie will then introduce the enchanting autobiographical feature BEACHES OF AGNES and host a post-film Q&A about the movie and Varda’s larger work. About the movie: What was initially thought to be her final film at the time. Filmmaker Agnès Varda reflects on a lifetime of creation and inspiration in this playful self-portrait of her life. Revisiting her past joys, successes, setbacks, and heartbreaks. Varda narrates her freewheeling journey as an artist and a filmmaker as she prepares to celebrate her 80th birthday on camera. About the Speaker: Carrie Rickey is film critic emerita of The Philadelphia Inquirer. She wrote about art for Artforum, Art in America, and Hyperallergic and about film for The Village Voice, Film Comment, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal. She has taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Drexel University, and the University of Pennsylvania. She won a regional Emmy for producing Before Hollywood: Philadelphia and the Birth of the Movies, and an LA Press Club award for a series on female filmmakers. In August 2024, Norton published Rickey's biography, A Complicated Passion: The Life and Work of Agnès Varda.
