While the story of the American Revolution and its most pivotal battles can be found in numerous books, one of the most important clashes of the war is largely unknown. It's up in the hills of Upper Manhattan where a two-hour battle resulted in General George Washington's first battlefield win, and helped restore confidence to the struggling Continental Army. What hidden-in-plain-sight landmarks and neighborhood secrets shed light on this crucial moment in American history? With the help of a retired National Park Service Ranger, it's time to hit the streets and walk in the footsteps of the forgotten soldiers who participated in the momentous battle.
Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the historic sites and landmarks related to the Battle of Harlem Heights, an important battle in the current-day neighborhood of Morningside Heights that gave the Patriot forces a brief, but sorely needed boost of morale as British forces fought their way into New York.
Led by George Tonkin — a licensed NYC tour guide, and retired National Park Service Ranger with vast experience working at Hamilton Grange National Memorial and Federal Hall National Memorial — our three-hour exploration across the hilly topography of Morningside Heights will include:
-A brief overview of the earliest days of the American Revolution and how the fight between the British and Continental Army made its way to present-day Morningside Heights
- The story of the Battle of Harlem Heights , and how it not only resulted in Washington's first battlefield success of the war, but also a much-needed morale boost for his troops
- A visit to important landmarks and sites frequented or related to The Battle of Harlem Heights, such as where General George Washington positioned himself during the conflict and the location where the Americans lost two of their most promising officers
-A vantage point with sweeping views of Harlem
See you there!
*One part of the 2.5 mile walk is on a steep incline on dirt, rock, and uneven stairs
**Please bring water and comfortable shoes — a moderate fitness level is recommended
***This tour concludes in front of Riverside Church at 490 Riverside Drive, steps away from the starting location
