From Louis Armstrong to the Hot Club of Paris, through bebop and jazz/rock fusion, jazz music has always been passionate, or “Hot.” This debut concert by The Barclay Jazz & Beyond Orchestra, led by music director, composer, arranger and pianist Shelly Berg, features vocalists Catherine Russell and Tierney Sutton, and saxophonist Tom Scott in a program spanning the broad array of popular jazz styles and songs. The program will feature classic compositions by Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, and more.
Catherine Russell , Grammy-winning vocalist and daughter of music legends Luis Russell (Louis Armstrong's long-time musical director) and Carline Ray (a pioneering vocalist and instrumentalist), performed on four continents and featured at major jazz festivals including Monterey, Newport, North Sea, Tanglewood, and has sold out The Kennedy Center, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and SFJazz. Her repertoire features gems from the 1920s through the present; vital interpretations, bursting with soul and humor, sparkling acoustic swing, and a stunning vocal approach.
Tom Scott is a multifaceted figure in the music industry, renowned as a composer, saxophonist, and educator. With 33 solo recordings, he's amassed 13 Grammy nominations and 3 wins. His vast career spans collaborations with iconic artists and contributions to hit singles and movie soundtracks.
Tierney Sutton ,a nine-time Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist, consistently earns "Best Jazz Vocal Album" nods for her innovative interpretations of The Great American Songbook. Her 14 albums explore diverse themes and pay homage to music legends.
Shelly Berg is an in-demand music director, bandleader, Steinway piano artist and five-time Grammy-nominated arranger, orchestrator, and producer. He is also the artistic director for The Jazz Cruise, and artistic advisor for the Jazz Roots series at the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami. An award-winning educator with over 40 years of leadership in higher education, Shelly is currently Dean of the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami.
The Barclay Jazz & Beyond Orchestra is a premier ensemble comprised of Orange County musicians that is dedicated to exploring jazz and popular music through the creation and presentation of unique and entertaining concert programs.
