About this Event

This Beginner-Intermediate level 3-part course is a foundational requirement for further intermediate study and teaches 3 separate rope tie styles:

Part A - Tying others,

Part B - Self tying -

Part C - Non-restrictive rope harness

Unit A - 10am-11am - The art of self-tying

Class will commence with a discussion on consent, relevant body physiology for wellbeing, and the unique safety aspects of self-tying. We recommend that students arrive on time as they will need to have attended the consent and safety section to be able to participate in the hands-on tying component. Next we will move onto rope flow.

Students will then be shown the column tie (arguably the foundational tie for many other designs within shibari) and then 2 self-tying techniques.

Rope Tops may find self-tying a useful way to advance their dexterity and muscle memory during times when they do not have a rope bottom available. Ultimately, this extra practice on oneself can lead to greater confidence, deftness and speed in tying others. Self-tying also provides Rope Tops with insight into the experience of being tied which can improve empathy with your rope bottom, understanding of how rope choice/ tension/ placement impacts upon the limbs being tied, and capacity to keep them safe.

Rope bottoms (AKA rope models) can find self-tying provides access to the sensory experience of being tied during times when a rope top might not be available. The process of learning self-tying also gives the rope bottom insight into how to tie safely, knowledge that can provide an extra layer of protection in knowing what to look for when they themselves are tied.

Switches: For those who already like to tie and be tied, self-tying enables fusion of the two together. Simply put you can have your kinbaku and eat it.

For those who do not identify within the more binary rope bondage descriptions, a combination of some or all of the above self-tying benefits may apply. Either way, you are likely to have fun.

Importantly, the techniques that will be learned in this class unit can be also applied to the tying of others.

Unit B - 11-12am – Bondage Tying others

This foundational course provides the student with basic skills for learning shibari rope bondage and teaches how to tie a chest harness.

Course will commence with a discussion of shibari origins, relevant human anatomy, consent and safety. We recommend that students arrive on time as they will need to have attended the consent and safety section to be able to participate in the hands-on tying component. Next we will move onto rope flow.

Class rope will be made available during the workshop. There will also be opportunity to purchase quality rope, books, shears, rope treatment, the PersonAble full range of shibari rings and suspension equipment. PersonAble is a Melbourne based company committed to high quality rope bondage supplies and workshops.

Unit C – 12 midday - 1pm - The Art of Non Restrictive Rope Harnesses

Learn how to tie beautiful and practical non-restrictive rope harnesses.

As an outfit.

Non-restraining rope harnesses provide an element of sensuality and eroticism to your outfit. This can be fun for events such as festivals, play parties and other kink events. Even household chores can be more fun when the right harness has been donned. With the recent boom in Work-at-home arrangements, your ability to spiced up Monday morning … just be sure to plan around any work-related zoom meetings.

In play

Rope bondage need not be restrictive. Non-restrictive rope harnesses can also be a way of dipping a toe in the shibari pool when one or both partners are not ready to move onto restraint. Retaining use of one’s limbs can present a practical advantage when engaging in kink roleplay or other forms of intimacy. Imagine a rope bottom that is still able to rush off to the toilet mid-play, perform any pre-negotiated servitude, fully stretch out their kitten form, or proactively contribute to play in some other way all the while enjoying the snugness of their rope top’s binding caress.
