About the Artist:
Shakira Olivera-Bautista is a 22-year-old Mexican American artist from Greenville, South Carolina, finishing a B.A. in Studio Art at Furman University. Her art is rooted in personal stories, cultural memory, and identity, and she works across painting, drawing, photography, and illustration. A lot of her inspiration comes from her heritage and everyday life moments that continue to shape the way she sees the world.
For her 2025 senior capstone, Navigating Dualities, she created a ten-piece digital illustration series that reflects the layered experiences of Mexican American college students in the South. The project highlights immigrant narratives, gender equity, and voices that often go unheard, and it’s been recognized for the way it brings those stories forward. Through her art, she hopes to create spaces for dialogue, connection, and the celebration of our shared cultural heritage.
