Creative Writing for Everyone
Wednesdays, October 1, 8, 15, 22 | 5–7:30 pm | Free
Are you a writer looking for inspiration? The Utah Museum of Fine Arts is home to an extensive collection of original artworks representing a diverse range of global cultures from the ancient to the contemporary. Open to writers of all ages and skill levels, this art-filled creative writing workshop will help you find a new muse in the UMFA, create new work, and meet fellow writers. Bring a friend, or make a friend! Each session will have a unique focus, so you can attend just one workshop, or you can attend them all and find new inspiration each time.
From an ancient Roman statue of Aphrodite to contemporary art from across the globe, the Museum can offer you a world of artistry to explore. Untitled (L.A.), a conceptual artwork by Félix González-Torres, is currently on view in the Global Contemporary gallery. The candies at the center of the gallery are for guests to take. The candy will gradually be depleted and replenished, and over time, it will become a ritual of remembrance and renewal. The artist lived at the height of the AIDS epidemic and tragically lost his partner, Ross Laycock, to AIDS-related complications in 1991. González-Torres is known for work that addresses themes of love, change, loss, responsibility, and perpetual renewal. This creative writing workshop will explore these themes and the ways art and writing can encapsulate the art of remembering.
Agenda:
- Gather: meet other writers in the classroom.
- Explore: find inspiration in the galleries.
- Create: draft new work in the spirit of first-draft fun.
- Share: writers may choose to read their new work aloud to our group & other visitors.
