About this Event
Welcome to The Art of Reading Smoke - KZOO FOOLS Winter Seminar with Rob Backer! Join us at the Comstock (High School) Community Auditorium, 2107 N 26th St, Kalamazoo, MI 49048, for a 4-hour presentation of Rob Backer's The Art of Reading Smoke. In the afternoon, we will break into small groups for case studies with Rob Backer, forcible entry and through-the-lock training, and fire behavior demonstrations. Please bring work gloves and eye protection, if able. Attendees will receive certificates for continuing education credits.
After the seminar, join us at FOP Lodge #98, 1721 Riverview Ave, Kalamazoo, MI 49004, for our Brotherhood Bash. Food will be provided, and drinks and raffle items will be available.
The Art of Reading Smoke, developed by Dave Dodson and continued by Rob Backer, provides the knowledge necessary for first-arriving firefighters, officers, and chief officers to determine the fire's location and progression "from the seat" before seeing any flame. This knowledge ensures that correct tactics are implemented for the best possible outcome. Through the extensive use of actual fire ground videos, first-time students will develop, and returning students will refine their knowledge and skills to become INTELLECTUALLY aggressive firefighters, rather than ARBITRARILY aggressive. The next generation of The Art of Reading Smoke brings new research, a new library of videos, and discussion on cancer prevention, tactics, and strategies to blend today's fire service extinguishment and safety cultures into one cohesive unit.
