Canine expert Nelson Hodges will be teaching this 2 day course on the art of leash handling, following his Relationship Based Behavior Modification 3 day workshop (see our events section for the RBBM workshop!). This hands-on workshop with you and your dog will provide an in depth look at the oldest training and communication tool used between humans and dogs. You will learn to focus on the signals you send to your dog and the signals your dog sends to you through the leash. You will gain an understanding of how to communicate your intent, even before leash use. You will learn how to build trust and communicate through feel, timing, and touch. Each student will receive individual instruction throughout the course. This is an excellent opportunity for owners, trainers, veterinarians and assistants, handlers in animal shelters, and other canine professionals.Dates: June 14-15, 2022

Tuesday and Wednesday 8:00am-5:00pm
Please arrive 30 minutes early to potty/settle your dog. We will begin promptly at the above start times.

Water and light snacks will be provided.
Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner are not provided. You are welcome to bring a lunch. The facility has a refrigerator, freezer, and microwave. Restaurants and grocery stores are also within an 8-15 minute drive.
*Each attendee is encouraged to bring one dog with them.
*Dogs should not be severe in either fearful shutdown or human/dog aggression. This is out of safety for all in attendance and in consideration of the amount of time it would take away from other dogs waiting to meet Nelson!
*Dogs with mild/moderate fear or reactivity are welcome as long as the handler is capable of controlling them physically.
*We will make every attempt to accommodate, include, and assist every dog.
*Attendees must be able to place their dogs calmly and quietly in crates for up to 90 minutes at a time.
About Nelson
Nelson Hodges has worked with animal behavior and rehabilitation for more than 40 years. He has specialized in canine behavior, helping others understand the nature, intelligence, motivation, and language of all canines. During that time Nelson has personally worked Hand’s on with thousands of canines of all breeds. His behavioral cases include many of the most extreme behaviors from shut down fear to severely aggressive dogs, and all behaviors in between. He has been a long time advocate for understanding canine behavior and ethical treatment and handling.
Nelson was elected to the board of directors of the International Association of Canine Professionals (IACP) for the term of 2015-2019. He is also a member of other affiliations of animal behavior and human psychology. Nelson’s client locations have ranged from the USA and Canada, to Sweden, the UK, Korea, Ukraine, and Germany. He has been able to assist others in modifying behaviors through consultations in person and virtually. He has written articles for various publications including TheSafeHands Journal, IACP’s quarterly publication, and has appeared on TV, radio, and podcasts.
Mr. Hodges has provided and continues to provide public and private group seminars and workshops that draw people from the canine professional training community, service dog industry, rescue organizations, animal shelters, police officers, military, postal service, veterinarians and staff, to everyday dog owners since 1991. Nelson is currently writing a book on the canine brain, motivations, behavior, and language named “If You Want to Learn How to Talk to Your Dog, Shut Your Mouth”.
