phenomena. Learn Japanese Kimono culture and modern fashion!
About this Event
Step into the world of ancient Japan, over 1,000 years ago, and experience the beauty and grace of the Jūnihitoe - one of Japan's most iconic and elaborate kimono styles!
"Junihitoe" means 12 layers in Japanese. This multi-layered kimono, sometimes with more than 12 layers, weighs 15 to 20 Kg (33 to 44 LB) . It is so thick it can stand on its own, called "Monuke no kara" (meaning "Empty Shell")!
This is a one-of-a-kind cultural experience, perfect for history buffs, fashion lovers, and anyone curious about Japan’s incredible heritage. Don’t miss your chance to see this rare demonstration UP-CLOSE in person!
Event Highlights:
- Live Demonstration: Watch the Jūnihitoe being worn, layer by layer, revealing its complex elegance. Witness the "empty shell" phenomena and experience* the weight of the garment.
*Due to time constraints, not all participants may be able to experience it.
- Cultural Insight: Discover the rules and traditions behind the garment and explore the fascinating culture of the Heian Period.
- Fashion Connection: See how the Jūnihitoe has shaped modern Japanese fashion and kimono culture.
