About this Event

This interactive session examines voter suppression in Tennessee as a deliberately constructed system rather than a series of isolated barriers. Drawing on personal narrative, historical context, and current policy, the presenter explores how laws, administrative practices, and political decisions shape who has access to the ballot—and who does not. Participants will engage in guided reflection and small-group discussion to identify modern forms of voter suppression, understand their disproportionate impact on marginalized communities, and consider strategies for protecting and expanding democratic participation. The session is designed to deepen civic understanding while equipping participants with language and tools to recognize and challenge structural barriers to voting.

This class is presented in partnership with League of Women Voters Chattanooga and The Chattery.

About the instructor:

Dr. Wonjen C. Bagley is an assistant professor of social work, civic educator, and public scholar whose work examines the intersection of race, democracy, and structural inequality. Her scholarship and community engagement center on promoting social justice through social work education and civic participation. With a background in social work practice, education, and nonprofit leadership, she brings a systems-level lens to issues of voter suppression, community disenfranchisement, and systemic disparities, with particular attention to their root causes. Her teaching and public scholarship are informed by lived experience, historical inquiry, and a commitment to equity-centered civic education.

Dr. Bagley has led trainings and facilitated conversations for nonprofit organizations, community groups, and educational institutions, translating complex social and policy issues into accessible, engaging learning experiences. Her work emphasizes not only understanding the architecture of suppression, but also equipping communities with the language and tools needed to recognize and challenge barriers to full participation in democracy.
