“The Architecture of Fitchburg’s Factories”

Sara E. Wermiel is a consulting historian of building construction and the construction industry who researches and writes about the history of buildings, industries (e.g., construction, textile manufacturing, fire insurance), and firms. She has a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and her specialty is high-tech construction materials of the nineteenth century: structural iron and steel, structural hollow tile, concrete and reinforced concrete. She publishes and presents her research widely and has taught at Boston University, Boston Architectural College and MassArt.

At this talk, she will look at the development of factories and industrial architecture, using Fitchburg’s collection of historic factories as her examples.
