The Alabama Archaeological Society, Southwest Chapter Presents:
“Anthropology of Zombies: From History to Speculation”
Zombies have created blockbuster movies since 1932 but existed long before becoming the star of wild sci-fi tales. Zombies draw from our real human past, and they are a representation of our present fears! Dr. Kles will examine the cultural origins of zombies, look at archaeological evidence of attempts to prevent these creatures from rising, their pop culture and examine how they have changed our society and fears over time. While not a traditional archaeology presentation, it will touch on all four fields of anthropology and give you greater appreciation for the zombie genre while binge watching scary movies before Halloween!
Dr. Maranda Almy Kles is a bioarchaeologist and forensic anthropologist. Her research originally focused on the association between biological and cultural variation in the archaeological record. Recently, her research interests have focused on historic cemeteries and evaluating archaeological predictive models in southwest Florida. Maranda earned her PhD from the University of FL and taught at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and the University of Florida for several years. She is currently the President of Archaeological Consultants, Inc. a cultural resource management firm in Sarasota, Florida and the President of the Florida Anthropological Society.
Free and Open to the Public!
If you are unable to attend this talk on Wednesday, Dr. Kles will also be giving the talk to the Pensacola Archaeology Society on Tuesday, Oct. 14. For details, visit: https://pasfl.org/
