Road travel in the East Allen dale in the 1820s was revolutionised by the construction of a new road from Hexham to Allenheads; a faster, broader road that you could use by paying a toll.With ten toll cottages controlling the road, the ‘Allendale Turnpike Trust’ only lasted from 1826 to 1875 but its traces in the landscape endure to the present day.
