Friends of the Knox County Public Library is welcoming Dr. Joshua Cunningham for a talk titled "The AI of the Beholder: Art and Creativity in the Age of Algorithms," an evening exploring creativity and technology in today’s world.Location: East Tennessee History Center
Date: Thursday, January 8 | 6:00–7:00 PM
Cost: Free admission with ticket registration
Artificial intelligence was designed for calculation, yet it is now painting, composing, and writing. But is it truly making art? In this talk, Dr. Cunningham will explore how AI is changing the way we create and experience art. Drawing on history, technology, and ethics, he will look at how algorithms challenge our ideas of originality and authorship while opening new possibilities for creative expression. He will also discuss the environmental impacts of large-scale AI, the ethical dilemmas of machine-made art, and the evolving legal questions around ownership.
Dr. Cunningham is an IT Project Manager at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, supporting national-scale projects in quantum and high-performance computing. His book, "The AI of the Beholder," offers a thoughtful and accessible look at the intersection of technology, artistry, and society, and will be available for purchase at the event through Union Avenue Books.
I hope you will consider joining us for this engaging and timely conversation to start the new year on an inspiring note.
