This five-week course will examine the process of ageing in humans and finish with some research-backed advice on how to age well, in terms of preserving optimal physical and psychological functions, to ensure a high quality of later life. No previous scientific knowledge is required. Lecture slides will be provided to participants.
We will cover the following topics:
Week 1 - 24th February 2025
What is Ageing? Perspectives and History.
This lecture will look at how ageing has been perceived in history and through literature. Ageing will be defined and the two main theories of ageing presented. There will be an introduction to some basic biology to make understanding the subsequent lectures easy.
Week 2 - 3rd March 2025
Biological Aspects of Ageing.
The theories of ageing will be discussed in more detail with supporting evidence. Diseases of age and the ageing brain will be presented.
Week 3 - 10th March 2025
Psychological Aspects of Ageing
The effect of ageing on self perception, cognitive abilities and mental health will be discussed. Social and societal aspects of ageing and care of the elderly will be presented.
Week 4 - 17th March 2025
The Future of Ageing and Gerontology.
Developments in the treatment of age-related conditions and care will be described.
Week 5 - 24th March 2025
Ageing Well, Ageing Gracefully.
Approaches and practises to maximise physical and mental health and well-being will be discussed.
Tutor: Dr Roddie Mckenzie
Roddie McKenzie was an assistant professor in immunology at the University of Toronto, a senior non-clinical lecturer in dermatology at the University of Edinburgh and spent 25 years in research, mainly on the molecular biology and immunology of skin diseases. He has taught science to further education students and to undergraduate and postgraduate students in virology, immunology, genetics and genomics. His work has been published widely.
Roddie worked in the bio-technology industry and has an MBA. A registered practitioner with the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists, he continues to work as a counsellor, which he has done for fifteen years. He holds a postgraduate diploma in counselling and qualified as an alcohol counsellor.
