About this Event
In celebration of Women's History Month, The Philosophical Research Society invites you to embark on a mesmerizing journey into the world of animation and myth as we present THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ACHMED (Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed), the groundbreaking 1926 animated fairytale film by Lotte Reiniger, accompanied by a live score composed and performed by the ethereal musical collective, ELF FREEDOM!
Lotte Reiniger’s THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ACHMED is not only the oldest surviving animated feature film, but it is also a revolutionary work created by a woman in an era when, even in its earliest days, animation was a male-dominated field. Reiniger’s stunning silhouette animation technique — meticulously crafted by hand-cutting intricate figures and using a backlit screen — brought to life a fantastical world of magic, adventure, and heroism. The film tells the story of Prince Achmed's journey across exotic lands, battling sorcerers, mythical creatures, and overcoming challenges that ultimately lead him to love and redemption. As we celebrate Women's History Month in March, we honor Lotte Reiniger’s invaluable contribution to the art of animation and storytelling.
In this live performance, ELF FREEDOM will take you on a transcendent sonic journey, blending their unique psychedelic sound with Reiniger’s iconic film. This experience is a deep dive into the emotional core of the film, where the music guides the audience through the various trials and triumphs of Prince Achmed, connecting each moment with heightened spiritual energy and creative expression. Elf Freedom’s score invokes both the adventure and the timeless themes of the film, amplifying the visual narrative and deepening its mythic resonance.
Elf Freedom is a mind-expanding music collective composed of sonic voyagers Nora Keyes, Bee Appleseed , Mirage, Noel Rhodes of Unusual Tuesdays, ZZ Ryder, Tonya Lee Jaynes, & Lord Blobbie. They have been dedicated to exploring & experimenting, pushing the boundaries of psychedelic improvised experimental immersive music as a conduit for sound healing — to create an experience of present moment awareness that lifts and inspires the listener so they feel recharged and connected to the creative spirit. Nora Keyes, a seasoned sound healer who masterfully intertwines her voice in a deeply immersive psychedelic sound journey. This event promises to transport you to a realm where music and film converge to become a unique journey to inform and uplift the soul.
The Adventures of Prince Achmed is a rich tapestry of myth and fantasy that can offer a poignant commentary on the eternal human pursuit of justice, love, and equality. The timeless battles between good and evil in the film resonate deeply in today’s world, where global challenges demand collective action and empathy. The film’s portrayal of a hero who must overcome darkness — both external and internal — echoes the struggle many face in today’s world as we confront societal and environmental crises. Just as Prince Achmed’s journey is one of growth, courage, and transformation, we too must navigate the complexities of modern life with strength and compassion.
In a world where animation continues to be a powerful medium for social commentary and emotional expression, ELF FREEDOM’s score will invite you to witness the deep connection between visual art and sound. The melding of these elements will transcend the boundaries of film, transforming this silent masterpiece into a living, breathing story that speaks directly to the heart and soul of the audience.
Join us for this extraordinary performance as we celebrate Lotte Reiniger’s pioneering work, pay homage to women in the arts, and journey together through the mythic world of The Adventures of Prince Achmed — where music, animation, and timeless themes intertwine to create an experience that will inspire and uplift.
