About this Event
Casa Cartel was originally built by Austin legend Abraham Kennedy, a Mexican immigrant who came to this country with nothing in the 1940s, and ended up opening one of Austin’s longtime beloved Tex Mex restaurants, El Gallo, in 1957, which enjoyed 60 years of business on South Congress before closing in 2017.
Kennedy built Casa Cartel over a two year period from 1975-76, and the awe-inspiring villa infamously played host to the most fabulous parties of the ‘70s and ‘80s.
The property was meticulously remodeled in 2018 and now features a plethora of antiques sourced from Mexico, and custom pieces were fabricated on both sides of the border. Perhaps the most striking piece of all is the dining table, made of an astounding single piece of wood measuring 13 ½’ long and 5 1/2 ‘ feet wide - and 4” thick!
Now, THAT table is where we are hosting our first Supper Society dinner party, where just ten of us will enjoy our chef's four course feast, featuring
Appetizer:
Pulled pork stuffed piquillo peppers with cilantro chimichurri and chipotle mayo
2nd Course / Salad:
Mixed greens with citrus beet vinaigrette, radish, herbs, orange segments, avocado
3rd Course / Main:
Steak and Shrimp Fajita surf & turf with grilled peppers and onions, tortillas, grilled mushrooms and beets and cauliflower
4th Course / Dessert:
Panna Cotta with peaches, mint, and almond crumble
We’ll pair each course with plenty of beverages from south of the border, and we’ll begin with a toast and a full tour of the amazing property with its current owner, then move to the dining room for the full feast, and hopefully all leave as newfound friends.
About THE ACTION PACK:
Back in the day, The Action Pack ran all of the “pop and party” events at the Alamo Drafthouse cinemas. In a theater famous for its very strict no talking / no texting policy, we were the goofballs who said, “Well, but what if we let everyone quote-along really loudly with their favorite lines from movies and TV shows?” That led to the now super popular Movie Parties that pack houses at theaters across the country.
We ran the music video sing-along dance parties in the theaters, and we originated a lot of the programming and events at the Alamo’s specialty bars, like The Highball or Barrel O’Fun in Austin, and beyond, with crazy dance parties, Air Guitar Championships, etc.
Oh, and for a while, we ran the pop up experiences of the Alamo’s Rolling Roadshow, like the mega popular JAWS on the Water screenings on Lake Travis, Sound & Cinema at the Long Center, the Alamo / Do512 adult summer camp parties at Camp Champions, and a bunch of other fun stuff like that.
We’re no longer officially connected with the Alamo, but we might throw some parties there again one day. In the meantime, we’re just going to pop up every once in a while with random fun (and mildly stupid) things that sound like a good time to us.
