The 442's return to Jack's Joint! These folks were one of the first bands to play at Jack's Joint. They played here in October of 2022 and the world was very different then. We were just coming out of the Covid era, and the venue was brand spankin' new. They were the 9th show ever to play at Jack's Joint. It was on a Sunday, and we were closed so we just gave drinks away. Everyone got a kick out of the fact that the show was so unorganized. But the band was incredible as usual. Once the air becomes still and the first note is played, nothing else matters. And they have just kept getting better and better.
Adam Maness is writing songs that are as good as anything ever written. His combination of pop sensibility and what it takes to write a great hook, along with living a good life filled with hard work, real love, and adventure in all directions, and finally, the chops. Adam has in his band a group of musicians that is akin to some kind of superhero movie. He has the "Mighty Six Musicians" or the "Superhero Sextet". His band is so talented that he can lean into that and write stuff that is very, very demanding, knowing that his band is gonna knock it out of the park! And Adam can sing! It's kind of unfair, but the guy can actually sing in tune and sounds great. And he's too nice to hate, so don't even try.
What we end up with is a group of songs that will make you melt in your chair. Then Bob will pull a bass solo that makes you blink as if what you saw and heard couldn't have possibly just happened. Kaleb's drumming is so damn good at this point that it almost disappears into the song (which is a good thing) until he takes off with a solo and then it's like a fighter jet taking precise turns while going near the speed of sound! Adam is such a sweet pianist that you sort of get spoiled. He's got an "it" factor that combines technical playing with feel and emotion that is absolutely gorgeous. And we haven't even gotten to the symphony musicians yet!
A cellist, a viola player and violin player walk into a bar. They walk out jazz musicians. Maybe that's what happened when Adam first said, "hey, I got an idea!" Sean and Bjorn and Adam are sitting around drinking beers or fine cognac, and after a few they hatch this idea. Let's combine three great jazz musicians and three great classical players and see what happens! (hiccup) Maybe they will tell us at the show what really happened, but no matter how they got together, we are sure glad that they did!
This is something that isn't happening too often. This band has been playing together for years at this point. They know each other well. They are a REAL BAND. There have been endless times when a symphony has taken on jazz tunes. The St. Louis Symphony recently took on R.E.M. tunes. Symphony players can really do anything they set their mind to musically. But that's not a band. A band is a group of people that stay together and write their own songs and figure out their own identity. A member may come or go but the core unit stays together year after year. That's what this band has done. They have the chops of symphony musicians and great jazz musicians with the sensibilities of a band. It's just totally unique and is exquisite to say the least.
So come check them out on a Saturday night when somehow the symphony folks don't have to work. We'll take it! See ya there!
