She is acclaimed for her music that interweaves classical music with elements of vernacular music, improvisation, poetry, and social consciousness. Works by Montgomery will be on each program. Sunday's program features Synergy Virtuosi, a new all-female African American orchestra including JMU viola faculty Diane Phoenix-Neal. Monday evening features JMU faculty Šarūnas Jankauskas performing John Adams' clarinet concerto Gnarly Buttons. Tuesday's program features the JMU Symphony Orchestra performing Montgomery's Soul Force and guest pianist Richard Shuster in the premiere of Jason Haney's concerto The Ice at the End of the World.
