The annual Salt Spring Film Festival celebrates its 26th Anniversary from February 27 to March 1. Please join us at Gulf Islands Secondary School for three days of unforgettable films!We’ll be screening award-winning documentaries from around the world, including seven Canadian premieres that haven’t yet been seen by audiences anywhere else in the country, and three BC premieres!
We’ve made a particular effort this year to include many upbeat, uplifting & entertaining films on a wide range of subjects, including:
• environmental & Indigenous issues in both North and South America;
• ocean health & science, bioluminescence, community-supported fisheries and ocean rowing;
• global conflicts in Ukraine & Gaza; women’s rights in the Church and on the soccer field;
• totalitarianism, censorship & the freedom to read;
• geo-politics & the global migration crisis;
• fiber arts such as tapestries & basket-making;
• the adventures of young people & the elderly;
• the protection of polar bears, manta rays & elephants;
• legendary icons of music, theatre, television, dance, art & photography; and
• the world’s greatest whistling competition!
Our program also includes two Special Presentations of audience favourites: Alison Reid’s THE ART OF ADVENTURE featuring Robert Bateman & Bristol Foster, which had two sold-out screenings at ArtSpring in November; and Mort Ransen’s classic 2001 NFB documentary “AH…THE MONEY, THE MONEY, THE MONEY” – THE BATTLE FOR SALTSPRING, with local film subjects Harry Warner, Briony Penn and others in attendance to discuss a quarter-century of local environmental activism.
An unusually large number of visiting filmmakers will be attending this year, from as far away as Whitehorse and San Francisco, to introduce their films and participate in moderated Q&A sessions after their screenings.
Our ever-popular Social Justice Bazaar will run all weekend, with numerous local nonprofits and community agencies represented.
