About this Event

Join us Wednesday, March 12 at 6 p.m. CT / 7 p.m. ET for "The 1990s: An Extraordinary Era in Film," a discussion about how American cinema in 1999 shaped and reflected the broader cultural conversation.

New York Times culture and arts critic Wesley Morris will explore what made American film exceptional in the 1990s  – through much of the Clinton administration – (particularly 1999) and the lasting influence of ’90s films on American popular culture.

This program is held in conjunction with our current temporary exhibit “Commanding the Screen: The American Presidency in Film and Television,” closing March 31.

About “Commanding the Screen”

“Commanding the Screen” presents the leading role of the president in American society through the lens of television and film. This exhibition invites visitors to explore cinematic performances of fictional and real-life presidents, and examine how America’s spirit, values, and historical journey are reflected in these portrayals of the Commander in Chief. It features original costumes, authentic props, and other memorabilia from portrayals of the American presidency on screen.

ASL interpretation is available during our events.

Clinton Presidential Center Presents is a partnership between the Clinton Foundation, Clinton School of Public Service at the University of Arkansas, and Clinton Presidential Library.

Wesley Morris is a critic-at-large at the New York Times and a staff writer at the New York Times magazine, where he writes about popular culture and hosts the podcast “Still Processing” with J. Wortham. For three years, Morris was a staff writer at Grantland, where he wrote about movies, television, and the role of style in professional sports, and co-hosted the podcast “Do You Like Prince Movies,” with Alex Pappademas. Before that, he spent 11 years as a film critic at the Boston Globe, where he won the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for criticism. In 2021, he was awarded a second Pulitzer in criticism for his writing at the Times. He’s from Philadelphia, PA, lives in Brooklyn. NY, and is a graduate of the Yale class of 1997.
