EXHIBIT DESCRIPTION
This year’s theme is “Express yourself with ikebana”. Sogetsu Ikebana promotes this practice of art-making with flowers by anyone, anywhere in the world, any time, and with any kind of material, self expression at it's hight!
Ikebana is the art of Japanese flower arrangement. Blossoms, branches, leaves, and stems are used as tools to create artwork with nature. Ikebana” is derived from the two words in Japanese ikeru (生ける, “living”) and hana (花, “flower”). Ikebana means “giving life to flowers”. In contrast to the western habit of casually placing flowers in a vase, ikebana is like building a live sculpture that brings out the inner qualities of flowers and other live materials which express deep emotion.
Our local ikebana artists will showcase both traditional styles of ikebana with natural branches and flowers, as well as more modern and exotic works with local desert materials, plastics, metals, and fabrics. This year’s exhibit also includes Japanese dolls and Japanese scrolls alongside the flower arrangements.
Guests can also peruse a Japanese vintage market and take part in a silent auction offering authentic Japanese items to purchase and bid on. Japanese snacks and drinks will also be available at our Gift Shop pop-up shop.
