That's Absurd! is a collection of five five-minute sketches vaguely relating to the meaning of life, but not enough to make you feel uncomfortable in your seat. It's a comedic exploration of five different situations in which absurd things happen that aren't at all believable, so you shouldn't come to this event expecting to see a historical drama. That would be awkward. The runtime is approximately 25 minutes, but this may be subject to change as Leo hasn't finished editing it yet. He may decide to just cut all the dialogue out and have only breath noises and eating sounds.Featuring entirely local Canberra artists and shot entirely in Canberra, That's Absurd! is Leo Amadeus's scriptwriting and directorial debut. Not that his directing style is particularly harsh. He sort of just says "Say the words and do the things. We'll fix the rest in post."
Not only is there a screening of the film at this event, but you are going to be eased into existentialism with four brackets of live entertainment.
The live performers:
Oakelani Edmonds
Oakelani is a singer-songwriter from the Oakelani is a singer-songwriter from the gorgeous Murrumbateman and Canberra Region. With folk songs about Climate Change to bonsai trees, Oak loves a good story and her songs will draw you in from start to finish.
Rylee de Salis
Marcel Cole
Marcel's performance training began at the age of nine at the Kim Harvey School of Dance in Canberra, where he studied ballet, jazz, tap and contemporary dance. He went on to pursue ballet and contemporary dance at the New Zealand School of Dance in Wellington, NZ, but then took a different turn. After studying theatre, mime and clown in Australia, England and France, Marcel has hit the variety scene and is currently touring the Australian fringe circuit with his award-winning musical comedy show The Ukulele Man.
Leo Amadeus
Leo once read Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett and his whole understanding of the life and world was transformed. These are two things that have no causal relationship, they just happened to happen at a similar time. An actor, writer and musician, and lover of absurdism, Leo writes comedy songs, accompanying himself on the piano or the ukulele, and sometimes his carefree attitude and lack of groundedness can make you wonder if he's really in his right mind at all. In July 2024 he launched an album, These Past Few Years, at Smith's Alternative.
Come along to Smith's to enjoy a variety of comedy and music, sometimes fused into one! And also the film. That's the main thing. Come to see the film. Please.
