$5/10That Poetry Thing presents Sarah Whiley (ACT) + Juan Garrido (SA) + open mic
Sarah Whiley grew up in Canberra, and lived in Melbourne and North East Victoria for 20 years. Immersing herself in local culture and natural beauty, Sarah has long nurtured a passion for writing, particularly poetry. She explores themes of emotion, connection, and the human experience. Sarah finds inspiration in the quiet moments outdoors, drawing from the natural world to inform and ignite her expression. Photography also plays an important role in her artistic practice, allowing her to capture the subtle, fleeting moments to offer a visual counterpart to her written words.
Returning to Canberra in recent years, Sarah has become a regular at That Poetry Thing. Her poetry aims to bridge her inner reflections and the beauty of the world around her. Sarah's work has been published online, and in the 2023 "Poetry D'amour" anthology, the "2023 Paul Cave Prize for Literature" Collection, and the 2024 "Listen" Anthology.
Juan Garrido Salgado has lived in Australia since 1990. He has published eight books of poetry in Australia and Chile. His work has been widely translated into several languages. Juan has translated works by Australian and Aboriginal poets into Spanish. In 2019, he read poems from his book' When I was Clandestine' (Rochford Press) as part of a poetry tour at the Granada International Poetry Festival in Nicaragua, and in Mexico and Cuba. 'Hope Blossoming in Their Ink' (2020) and 'The Dilemma of Writing Poems' (2023) were published by Puncher & Whitman. 'Feather of a featherless bird - Pluma de un Pájaro Desplumado' is in development.
