That Poetry Thing presents two local feature poets, Andrew Geraghty and Barbara Curnow plus an open mic (3 minutes sign up on the night.)
Andrew Geraghty was born in Sydney in 1956. His father ran a major Publishing Company and his mum was an art teacher. He was a journalist for 35 years, with The Morning Bulletin, The Courier Mail then Murdoch suburbans in Melbourne.
Moving to Canberra, Andrew switched to editing. He was among the first editors in Australia to produce a nationwide magazine using a home PC. He was a Speaker for Beyondblue for nine years. His first book, 'Assault on the Mind - surviving mental illness' was an autobiographical look at his own experiences and possible ways to cope. His second book, Journey and other poems is a collection of his poetry. The first 15 pages of both books can be viewed free at BLURB.COM. His website is 2risingfalcons.foxart.net.
Barbara Curnow was introduced to tanka by Kathy Kituai about 15 years ago and has enjoyed reading and writing tanka and tanka prose ever since. Her work has been regularly published in journals such as 'Eucalypt: A Tanka Journal, Skylark and Ribbons (The Tanka Society of America’s journal)'. Her work has also appeared in several anthologies including '100 Tanka by 100 Poets of Australia and New Zealand', edited by Beverley George and Grevillea and Wonga Vine, edited by David Terelinck and Beverley George. Barbara received a Eucalypt Distinctive Scribblings Award in 2012. Barbara finds much inspiration and creative camaraderie by being part of a weekly writing group, known as Friday Writers, and also the Lyrebird Tanka Circle.
