πΊπΈ Backstory:
The Pilgrim Fathers were a group of English people who wanted to follow their own religion without being told what to do by the Church of England. They lived in a small village called Scrooby (home to the Pilgrim Fathers pub of course!), but because they didnβt follow the king's church, they were treated unfairly.
They'd heard about America and thought it could be the perfect place. In 1620, they sailed on a ship called the Mayflower to start a new colony. After a long, difficult journey, they landed in Massachusetts. There, they worked hard to survive, and with the help of Native Americans, they learned how to grow food and survive the tough winters.
The Pilgrims' journey is remembered because they came to America for religious freedom and helped start a new way of life in the New World. The Pilgrim Fathers played a pivotal part in what would later go on to become the United States of America.
Not only that, but the Pilgrim Fathers are believed to have started what is now known as 'Thanksgiving', one of the biggest holidays celebrated by Americans today.
They helped inspire Thanksgiving in 1621, after their first successful harvest in Plymouth, they held a big feast to celebrate and gave thanks. They invited the Wampanoag Native Americans, who had helped them survive by teaching them how to grow food.
Fancy that?! Some Scrooby lads helped form the America we know today and helped created a big annual celebration to boot. π₯³
